Parent FAQ

Parents of Potential New Members,

The decision to join a sorority is a large opportunity to consider in a woman's collegiate career and we know you have questions, so we are here to answer some of the most frequently asked questions!

Why Join Sigma Kappa?
Sigma Kappa at the University of California, Berkeley is a loving, empowering community where your daughters can find opportunities, friendships, and a lifetime of support. Sigma Kappa lives out their 4 values through every aspect of their organization, which encourages members to do the same in other aspects of their lives. Personal Growth motivates members to aim to be the best version of themselves and to constantly develop their character. Service encourages members to give back to their community, family, and friends by participating in chapter philanthropy events and extending aid to other people in their lives. Friendship allows members to cultivate strong connections with their sisters and alumni during and after their collegiate experience. Loyalty promotes our members desire to remain devoted to those friendships and connections they make while an active member. The Lambda chapter promotes these 4 values within every Sigma Kappa woman and will lead her to live a well-rounded and enriched life.

Will joining Sigma Kappa take away from my daughter's college education?
Not at all! The Lambda chapter understands that our women are students at the University of California, Berkeley first and foremost before they are sorority women, specifically at a college of this caliber. Our in-depth scholarship program, developed by our Vice President of Scholarship, holds members accountable while motivating and supporting them through their collegiate careers by offering quiet study hours once a week. We also develop a strong mentorship among women with similar majors and connections with older members and alumni regarding internship and job opportunities. At the Lambda home, all members have access to a twenty-four-hour quiet room as well as the ability to reserve other rooms in the house to study or host group study sessions such as the library or TV room. Sigma Kappa is committed to all of our member's academic success as an involved organization at Berkeley.

What are some opportunities during college that Sigma Kappa provides?
During college, the Lambda Chapter provides not only a vast network of alumnae living in the Bay Area but support and advise current members who are nearing the end of their collegiate careers. In addition, given our extremely tight relationship with our alumni, there are constantly opportunities, both job and volunteering, that are extended to our active members. There are also opportunities to join leadership positions within the chapter as well as the Panhellenic Community, volunteer in projects organized by any of our five philanthropies, and many other opportunities on the campus itself.

How can my daughter benefit from Sigma Kappa after she graduates?

Sigma Kappa's alumnae network extends far beyond just the Bay Area. Wherever our members chose to go, there is always a Sigma Kappa willing to lend a helping hand. Our current members and alumnae both have incredible wisdom, personal and professional experience, and loyalty to one another that proves that joining Sigma Kappa is not only for 4 years but for a lifetime.
